Some thoughts:
Have you considered working with a local plater in some capacity on weekends or evenings?
That might be a stretch but it's not out of the question. You might find someone locally willing to accept some free help in exchange for some learning and insight.
Also consider a local community college chemistry class. A lot of the mistakes that are made are due to the need to understand some chemistry basics.
Go back and read the manual cover to cover. You'll be surprised how much better we learn when we have made a few mistakes. It's just the way it is.
