What kind've part is it? Does it have a rough cast finish? If so, starting off with buffing is skipping a step. It will need to have the roughness sanded out first. Get down to at least a 400 grit, (600 would be better), and THEN start in with the emery and buffing wheel.

Some pics of the part might help us help you better. Depending on how rough the surface is to start out with, you may not need to go as low in the grit range with sanding. (Which will save you time and energy.)
