Default removing metal lacquer

what is the best way to remove clear metal lacquer from my aluminum parts? i assume lacquer/varnish remover exists, but i was wondering if maybe sanding or some type of buffing will remove it.
im restoring aluminum parts from my 79 honda cb750f, and even with my 1hp buffer, a sisal wheel, and black emery its still a bitch to cut through the lacquer, and it seems to be 'gumming' up my wheels, rendering them stained a useless after a few strokes, requiring cleaning and more compound.
thanks for the help, im sure this forum will be a big help in this restoration project!
