Question Coloring by Lacquering Over Plating

Ok, I made a diligent effort in searching the post for my answer but didn't find it. =( Alas, I must post a thread myself.

Ok, I believe I've got the electroplating down - just a few questions that I'll post elsewhere.

I would like to plate both a flute and piccolo. One I will keep in either silver gold. But for the other, I would like to possibly add/make it a different color. ie:

In the description, it says "Purple Lacquered Piccolo..." I'm assuming the lacquer is what gives it that "translucent" or "matalicy" purple color - opposed to an opaque/solid color that powder coating gives you.? Is this correct? Would this be safe to use on a plated surface, any special prep? And is it safe to be used on something like a musical instrument, is it toxic or leave a film?

In other words: How the h#!! did they get that piccolo purple??!!!
