I have been working on all the aluminum parts on my 69 Commando and have been working on the corners, etc by hand. Once you get to 220 it is not too bad, just takes a while. Sometimes I will wrap the paper around a round file or pencil or some other small cylinder and just go at it for the inside corners. I see some people use the felt bobs and you could try it with the greasless compound which should get you to 400. Once you get that far it is not bad to go by hand through 600, 1000, 1200.
