Default Creating "brushed satin" from shiny chrome?

Is it possible to turn a shiny chrome surface into a well-executed "brushed satin" finish, on a small object, like a chrome kitchen faucet? Can it be done simply by roughing the chrome with the proper grade of steel wool? If this wouldn't work, or if it would only produce a sloppy, non-uniform brushed effect, does anyone know of other options to make chrome look like real brushed satin?
