If it "smears" it's probably not really dry. It can look dry on the outside but not really cured. I use an old hair dryer to make sure. Be sure to let it cool some before you use it - the heat may leave it a little soft.

Can't think of another reason for your problem. One thing I do is to cut slits in the bob, lengthwise with a sharp knife or hacksaw blade - not real deep, but enough to give the surface some tooth for the compound to stick to.
Maybe your greaseless is sliding off the bob.
