Hey Nick, don't do the nickel one, the plating is soft and thin. Stay with a cream polish for that one unless you are going to have it re-plated.
You can do the flat sides by putting sticky sand paper on a hard flat surface and carefully rubbing straight through the strokes. You can also try clamping the gun slide in a way that you can hand sand with a hard foam block.
The finer the grit the brighter the grain. I always get it real close then go back a grit to finish it off.
Example: 120, 220, 320, then back to 220 for the final pass.
At this point you may also try using an abrasive scrub pad to soften or blend.
