I just bought a motor and fan (squirrel cage) from an electric motor repair shop and the ole timer told me that if the fan was moving to much air, just block the intake and it will slow the motor down and won't hurt the motor and actually make it last longer.
Go figure. If mine runs to fast, I will take his word, as he is a repairman for electric motors. Just goes to show you, there is always more then one opinion on everything. So what's a guy supposed to do
