USE PLYWOOD - IT'S CHEAP - THEN COAT WITH GAS TANK SEALER!
It's a phenol novolac epoxy - cutting edge for chemical resistance.

Add a little lacquer thinner 5-10% to thin it, to aid in painting it out.
