Default Re: How many amps do I need to strip chrome

You will probably need more current.

How big are the parts?

What stripper are you using?

I find with an alkaline chrome strip (draino, sodium hydroxide) you need at least 250mA/square inch, 1A/Square inch will really rip it off quick. As the chrome strips off you will see the stainless steel cathode/s and the part fizzing and the solution around the item being stripped will turn yellow.

I usually hook the parts up and simply turn up the voltage untill I see the fizzing and yellow going into solution. I use car jumper leads to cope with the current.

WARNING: OLD CHROME PLATING IS HEXAVALENT CHROMIUM. WHEN YOU STRIP CHROME, YOU MUST DISPOSE OF THE STRIPPER CORECTLY.
