My shaft is heavy duty - about 4' long and the threaded end shaft is 1/2" - I bartered some polishing to get it 'cause they are expensive for my level of operation. I believe the motor is 1/3hp @ 1350rpm or so and is plenty, I never bog it down at all. I mostly use 4" or 6" razor wheels on it, also have a drill chuck to thread on the end so I can use it for any 1/4" or 1/2" tool.
One thing you can do to make it easier to use: I built a stand for it and mounted the motor on a lazy susan turntable - that way you're not constantly flexing the shaft in an S curve when you move it around.
