I'm not sure what what you mean. You simply use the tape to form the letters and/or borders at the high points. You can slit the tape using a straight edge and razor. There's another method to duplicate the original painting method but if you think you might have trouble with the tape, the other way will be imposible. You may be better off just shooting the background and have someone paint the letters for you as you say. Good luck.
