Does she go in the shop?Or you could tell her that some of the money you make with the new compressor can be used to do something she want like maybe a few renos.But be sure not to give a deadline on the reno,LOL.
Just remember that a bigger compressor is an investment that you dont want to do again,so it wold be better to spand a bit more now and not find out in 2 years that you need a bigger one for something else.I spent 1K on mine it is a 60Gal 5HP(running)240V single phaze,with no magnetic switch required,3 cylinder cast iron pump(145PSI max),but dont be fooled by HP numbers,colmen,porter cabel and some of the cheaper
one say 5hp but that is peak at no load.Hope this helps you on making you choice.
