I have started to sand this down by hand but 4 hours later I realised I hadnt even managed to do one tenth of one wheel I realised I may need some help.

What would you guys reccomend to use to get the surface flat before I can start on the polishing work?

I have seen some 80 grit greaseless compound mentioned, is that gonna be quicker?
If you actually have _flat_ areas you can do them with a palm sander or similar. For curved use greaseless, cartridge wheels, drum sanders, etc.

Try using 120 or even 220 grit first. 80 will be a little faster but will leave a lot of scratches to be removed.
