I made a cardboard box blast cabinet to do the rear axle housing for my street rod. They don't last, but will work for specific jobs. I lined the entire interior of the box with duct tape. This helps it last longer. Spring $5 for a bag of Black Magnum blasting grit instead of play sand, though. You're kind of splitting hairs (expense wise) on that one.
