Both ways of connection to the lead plate are good. Both have pros and cons. Most of the cons are remedied by common sense and maintenance.
Bolt connections need to be cleaned and tightened on occasion. The alligator clips need to be kept clean and have good spring tension.

I used 1/8" lead sheet mainly because I had access to that size but as acidrain said the thinner sheets work just as well.
