I've had great success NOT going live into the bath. Just don't let the part soak there without power for very long (keep it well under a minute).
One experiment I have tried with GREAT success is an idea that came from 48Buick (thanks 48!!) It's turning up the power and then going LIVE into the flash copper with Pot metal. It really helps the initial adhesion and eliminates the corrosion streaks.
