Default Plating pot metal for corrosion protection before painting

I have an old telephone (Western Electric 202) that is in pristine condition inside and out, but the paint has failed--evidently, solely because of small eruptions in the pot metal. Is a good metal primer enough of an undercoating (after I strip, sand and polish the metal), or would it ensure a longer-lasting finish to brush-plate the metal first? If so, what plating should I use? I'm thinking Flash Copper.

Thanks,

Rob Spencer
