Thread: How would i go about ano and dying this part?

Default How would i go about ano and dying this part?

How would i anodize and dye a part. I want to anodize the whole part but i only want to dye part of it. There is a good stopping point for the dye. Then i want to seal the part. I dont want to get any dye on the polished side. What would i use to protect it without contaminating the anodize before sealing. Can i use mask it?

Paint over the area you don't want dyed with rubber cement after anodizing. If it's too thick to control you can thin it with Goo Gone as well, which will also remove rubber cement after you've dyed and sealed it. Folks say toluene works for removal too if that's easier to find.

So anodize the whole thing, mask what you don't want dyed, then dye away. Seal, remove rubber cement -- but not sure you need to reseal because the masked part wasn't dyed.

Bom has most of it down. Just for me usually when I mask, I take the rubber cement off before I seal the first time.
If you seal with the rubber cement on, then take it off and just leave it, it will have the dyed layer a nice sealed, flat finish, and the undyed side will just be a rough clear coat.

OK I want part of it dyed and the oter part I want left clear polished. After I dye the part I want color on I remove the Rubber cement, then I seal the part. Will the glue and toulene not affect the anodize before it is sealed or affect the dye color before sealing?

Nope, if you use rubber cement it shouldn't affect anything.

Thats what i am trying to get at. Not sure if your understanding me correctly.
I need to seal the part thats covered with rubber cement also. i am asking if the toluene will affect the area of the part that i have not sealed yet. I am leaving that area polished and dying the other area black. Then i need to seal the entire part.

What I would suggest is : leave all naked until is has been thoroughly DI rinsed after the anodise tank. Then mask and dye. Seal for the first time; remove the mask; seal again.

If you tried to strip the mask before any sealing, you may damage the dyed area, or leach-out some of the dye. If you seal first, all you have to be careful about is avoiding mechancial damage to the un-dyed portion under your mask. After removing the mask, you will want to seal the newly-exposed area otherwise the open anodise matrix will, over time, take dirt & grease down into the cells. This could be viewed as sealing the dyed area twice, but 'excess' sealing not really a problem - once the top of the pores have been sealed, the cells don't take any more.

Would suggest that you experiment on scrap or coupons to find a technique that works for you.
