Default Anodizing of CPU Heatsinks

I was wondering if you had to completely submerge the item being anodized or could you leave one surface exposed?

The reason I ask this is I want to anodize a computer heatsink that has a copper insert in the base and I am afraid the acid solution will dissolve the copper. Or is there any way to protect the bottom of the unit to prevent it from being anodized with the rest of the part.

You can mask off any items you don't want anodized with masking lacquer. http://www.caswellplating.com/maskit.htm

People have suggested other techniques as well...check previous postings.
