Hello all, I'm doing some experiments. I want to get a handle on identifying alloy types, and have had marginal success with observed smut colors. My hope is to have the following alloy types arranged in a photo so that side-by-side comparison of the smut can be demonstarted.
I need: 2024 6061 6052 5052 7075 Ideally, the size of each sample would be a good sized plate of about 6"x6"x1/4". I can machine any odd sized scraps to these dimensions. I'll gladly pay shipping, but hope that the scraps can be donated as a group effort. Any takers? 6061 is the easy one, and I already have that, so I'll take it off the list. Thanks all, -Acid

Simply add your name to the list if you can help, then send me a PM, and I'll tell you where to ship and how to get re-imbursed for shipping (I have paypal if that works).

I'm doing great guys. I picked up 2024, 5058, 6061, and 7075. I've already started on my experiments, and will show results maybe tomorrow.
One thing I was able to demonstrate (in a photo) is the color of the smut, and how easy or difficult it is to wipe with a rag for each alloy. It should be possible to determine alloys in this way. I've also run each sample, individually at 6 amps per sq. ft., in a 70F 1:3 battery acid/water solution, carefully taking note of the volts every 5 minutes. I want to graph out my volts curve at the parameters I typically use. I'll use this data for other experiments coming up. I've run the parts for 1-1/2 hrs., and dyed them black. I typically need to run for 2 hrs at that CD to get a nice deep black. I want to compare the alloys side-by-side for color absorbsion. More to come later...

It would be nice if you could also dip them in the caswell desmut to see if it will remove, on 7075 when you etch and it turns black the caswell desmut will remove every trace of smut, others I'm sure silicon will not do anything.
I have read about other smut removers would be nice to get some of this, but from reading it's a bit nasty Keep us updated, looks like a sicky in the making, nice clear big images Clint |
