Hope this isnt bring up any old posts, but im trying to do a three color fade( yellow to orange to red (caswell dyes)). The part is about 13 inches long. I dyed the whole thing yellow for about 15 mins. Then 2/3 of it orange for 15 mins.It faded good, but when i dyed the last 1/3 red it didnt take the dye.I heard the domanint colors will over take the less dominant colors? Is it possible the pores were too filled up to take any more color? Should i do the first 2 steps then bleach out the color a little before the orange then do the red? Then to make it more interesting.... i want to mask and do the border in black. After i get the fade right should i do the mask then bleach the border then dye black? Will the bleach or acid rinse affect the masking(vinyl sticker)?
Any input would be much appreciated. Thanks Scott |

Yes, the pores will fill up even with lighter colors and not allow the darker color in.
There is a technique (that I'm not good at) where you dye it all one color, then bleach-fade. I'm not sure of the concentration of bleach/water, or if it's acually done with acid, but often times you will see a black to silver fade... that is done by chemical fading. Experimentation time! As for your mask, I have a lot of experience with that: Dye the part all black first. Mask your area (the part that is to stay black) with gloved hands. Bleach the entire part, and rinse well. Acid wash the part and rinse well to remove all traces of chlorine and remaining dye. Repeat if necessary. Now go to your other colors. After all your colors are applied, seal normally. After sealing, pull the mask, and remove the residue with clean lacquer thinner, and seal for an additional 10 minutes.

Acid rain is the man to talk to on masking.
I will be doing my first tri fade this friday. if you follow acid's tips this will work. The bleach concentration, Ive been testing full conc and diluted. What I found is a 1:1 ratio does quite well. dilute more if you need more time to 'work' with the effect. Personally, Ive looked at the angel rasta fade. It;s red in front, yellow then red. looks like what they did is dye the back part all yellow leaving the top undyed for the red to come in. The yellow is quite lite, so not much time in the tank and that wont fill up all the pores. Then fade the green in. The green looks like its a light version of the darker green caswell sells. Mixing a bit of yellow to the green can make this effect. Then fade the red. The red wont be blended with the yellow. To me, this sounds a bit easier to control the fading and blending this way. But if you do master the bleach method then this will prove valuable for other fades where you may not want any blends. If this works, this would be the fast way of doing it. Acids way will work without question. Ill post up here if this method works or what other methods ive used. Acid- Sounds like the method you laid out make more of a solid fade right? |

Well my first attempt at doing a fade with graphics...I did 1/3 in yellow(left it in too long) turned it around and did 2/3 in orange then bleached 1/3 off the orange end then did the red.Didnt quite fade(need more practice) Put on the decal and bleached the whole thing, then did the whole part black.Peeled decal(what a pain that was) scrubbed the residue with laquer thinner (another pain....stuff sticks good...10 year vinyl) Then sealed for 20.Good thing is i can strip it in 4 mins and redo it if wanted.
Thanks for all the tips and suggestions!!! Ill try to get pics on tonight. |
