Default Electro Ploishing

OK looked into Bright dip. BAD IDEA for a small anodizer. Seemed very dangerous and complicated. Now I am looking at electro polishing. This seems much easier and much less dangerous. Has anyone here attempted this?

Never tried it. Did have a tour one time of an electro polish place. They were polishing SS for me. Turns out great. From what i can tell, we already have all the equipment. Electro Polish (EP) is just ano in reverse.

Now thats where some issues come in. EP removes metals and leaves them in your bath. Then what to do with the heavy metal?

This sounds interesting... exactly what is the process? I've never heard of EP for aluminum.
Heavy metals? Aluminum is not a heavy metal. Are we talking about alum?

I have to admit, I have NO idea if this can be done with Alum. I was referring to the SS I had polished.

It seems to me the process should work for Alum, but I am no way a chemist. Anyone using Alum cathodes may be able to tell. Do they get any cleaner?

Maybe it is an area issue between the cathode and anode.

If you google electropolishing there is some good info out there.

From what I have read and been told the finish is equal or better than polishing and it takes less time.....like minutes

But do you know for sure if it'll work with aluminum or not?

I found a couple of descriptions... yes, many operation use electro polish for aluminum. It uses a pretty high CD, but so far, I haven't been able to find out what the electrolyte is.

Looks like it's phosphoric acid and a polymer 'having at least 4 ether groups'. I googled 'electropolish aluminum electrolyte'.

Would be a great Caswell kit (hasmat fee applies ). Would be neat to electropolish then anodize.

We've been through this a hundred times. There are several postings on this forum about it.
Forget it guys, the currents, and the acids involved make this a very NASTY operation.

It is not going to happen here, sorry!
