Default can I remove 'hard coating' (type 3)?

Suppose I have a piece of 'hard coated' 7075 and I want to remove the anodizing, then give it a type 2 bath with my LCD kit so I can put color in it. Can it be done?

Is that the same as the "etch" bath where you dip the part in a lye (drain cleaner)? That was my assumption but want to be sure.

That is correct. If you plan on needing to strip many parts by all means get your hands on the correct anodizing stripper. Using plain ol' drain cleaner will pit the heck out of your parts if you are NOT an eagle eye while it's doing it's thing.

I am no 'eagle eye' by any means. I haven't even done my first part yet. Anything you would recommend I use?

Will this leave a dull matte finish like the old fashioned 'lye' method?

With any stripper, you have to watch it, and help it along by scrubbing with a toothbrush or whatever.
The key is to leave it in only as long as it takes... too long and it will dull.
I always buff or beadblast afterwards anyway, so it's no big deal.

Thanks for sharing the info. Last night I did a small batch and they came out of the etch a lot better.
