We got a request to match a gold part. See fitting in picture. Our gold dye from caswell is what's on the part on the left. The customer would like a bit closer match. While the part on left could be left in the dye less time to lighten the shade, it will never really get close, as the customer's part has more yellow shade than ours. Does anyone get dyes elsewhere that might have a better match? Or does anyone mix dyes for this type of situation? Would caswell or someone do this?
Right now my only option seems to be to buy some yellow and gold and mix together constantly playing with the dye ratios, bleaching, dying the part...until I get something close enough. But which yellow dye would be best, since the colors on the website don't really match real world results at all?

Justin,
I have Caswell's Yellow D. It is a spot on match for the yellow you have on that fitting. I just looked on the dye list and i don't see that Caswell's has that yellow listed any longer. The Yellow 3GL looksl ike it would do the trick as it seems to have a hint of green in it much like the Yellow D has. I had alot of problems getting color matches on yellow and gold colors myself. You will be wasting your time I think trying to mix and match the yellow and gold as the gold is going to always over power the yellow. I tried a hundred different combos myself. I hope this helps. Thanks for trying Tim. We sent a sample of our gold to the customer and we'll see what happens. I saw that yellow 3GL as well... looks like the best chance, but I'm really gun shy when it comes to those color swatch pics on the web. Depending on the customer's response we will probably order the yellow 3GL and add in gold in small amounts trying to get close. We have an existing customer that has been accepting our gold as is, but we really have to watch the ano time and dye time closely. If ano'd not long enough...color is shade is inconsistent. too long and it's easy to get the parts to dark in shade of gold. time in dye bath is equally a pain in the ---. Anyway that's another subject....
Maybe this new color might satisfy both customers better killing two birds with one stone. Anyway we'll have to wait and see what the customer says about our existing gold and the cost to mix a new dye up. If anyone has any pics of parts done in yellow 3GL or other yellows, I'd be grateful to see them. I couldn't find any on the web gallery.

That'd be great. The parts we have to do are just machined finish, borderlined on polished. So you wouldn't need to go crazy on polishing on my account but preferably not dusted. It would also help to note what type of lighting the pics are taken as well... flourescent or incandescent. Then I'll take a pic our sample in the same lighting and compare them on screen. This would be a huge help and is a very generous offer. Thanks.

Colors can be affected by ano times as well. If you're coming out dark, go for less build.
Also, instead of mixing colors, simply dip in the other color. To match a color, here is what I do: Dip for only a few seconds in the color I think it is. Sneak up on the depth and watch the tone. If it seams to need a different tone, just dip in that color for a few seconds.

That's ok for onezies and twozies, but for a larger batch runs, we don't like the variation possibilities this method offers. So we're looking to mix dye for the whole run.
