Ive had good luck using an old large manual battery charger, it will bond a wire to the part just like the sput would.

OK, OK, I'm working on the problem. I've started the design for a CD welder that should be of similar capability to the dearly departed Sput Welder.
If it works well (it will), then I will build a second one and see if the folks at Caswell would like to evaluate it.
My dance card is full for this month, so it'll probably be the end of August before I even have a prototype to test.

And who at Caswell should I contact if I come up with a viable product for them to consider?

As I'm not anodising any more I've just put mine up on ebay.

I'm hoping someone can find a use for it as its been sitting on the shelf for a while now - it was the bigger of the two that where sold and always did a great job.

Hey SSWEE!
Say, you own a genuine sput welder, don't you?
I'd love to get a little input from folks who've used one about how thay like it.
Can you tell me if yours is type 5 or 6, and if it has enough power to do all the things you want from it?

Are there any features you wish it had that it doesn't?
Any features it has that you don't like?

I'm putting the finishing touches on my CD welder design, will order parts next week and start working on the circuit board layout. I'm hoping to have a working prototype up and running by mid august.

I have the larger unit. Can't remember the number. The only problem, so to speak, was the weak springs in the clamps. Bad connections in the clamps caused arcing in the clamp connection and it burning out the clamp teeth. Just replaced the clamps to fix. No problems with the welder itself. Always worked as it's suppose to.

Thanks sswee, I appreciate your input.
I'll be sure to use good stout clamps on mine.

Not sure if it's possible, but a speedier charge would be a most desirable improvement, but yeah I concur our's works great as well, We've since invested in titanium rods and don't use it as much, but I like the sput welder better for onesies and twosies racking. Customers don't like to hear that your welding to their parts anyway. and some parts just make it near impossible to have a location to weld to. No complaints about the welder from us either except the original clamps. They didn't last real long as the teeth kept arcing to the weld wire causing them to erode away. We got some new ones as lowes or similar that were plated and they are holding up great.

How long do you figure it takes to charge? Seems like I read somewhere it would do 100 welds an hour, which means a charge time of 36 seconds or less. Does that sound about right for the unit you've been using?
