Question Too much current!

I just bought a copy chrome kit. when i set it up and began to chrome;I started having problems. I later found out that i had too much current going to the part. causing the part to be black and crusty. When this happens will it ruin my solution? then after that happened i got flustrated and hooked the +/- backwards for about thirty minutes. i haven't attempted to chrome anything else. can someone help me?
thanks jeremy

Reversing the current wasn't good. Whatever metal you were trying to plate would have been dissolved into the solution. Depending on the metal, that might cause big problems for you. The only way to know for sure is to try plating something (the right way) and see what kind of results you get.

What was the metal you were plating?

First of all, let us know what type of metal you were reverse plating, please.

Hopefully, it wasn't pot metal, although you shouldn't have been plating that anyway.

Check the section on using a robber, and make one out of some sheet copper or steel. It should be at least 6x6" and you need to corrugate it in 1" bends.
The PLATE it, make sure you are in plating mode + to anodes, - to corrugated robber.

Hopefully, after about 1/2 - 1 hr, you should have plated out any contaminant. Then filter the solution and try plating something decent.

With LUCK, you should be fine. If not, repeat the process a couple of times.
