Thread: Use Plug & Plate to plate A/C lines?

  1. #1

Question Use Plug & Plate to plate A/C lines?

I am restoring the A/C system on my '69 Charger R/T and I am weighing my options on restoring the A/C lines. I would like to replate them in the clear zinc color but the lines are fairly long & would still have the rubber sections attached to them. As you can see some of the metal sections were originally painted black & the others were plated but now rusty.....I will de rust using a wire wheel etc.

My question is this, can I use the brush plating system on these steel lines or are they too large for this kit?

Attached is a pic of what I am working with. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

You'd never get it to match the original with rust pitting and the PnP kits. And in my opinion, way too large for PnP. On top of that, those old hoses probably leak and the mufflers are probably filled with gunk. No plater in their right mind would let those in their tanks. It's nearly impossible to clean those. I think you're best bet would be to look for an OEM hose set if you are truly looking to "restore" the vehicle. Be prepared with a HUGE bag of money though. The alternative would be to have an A/C shop make a set with yours as a pattern. Specify the heavy wall hose and it'll look pretty close to original. The same crimping ferrules and methods are still used today. It'll be a smaller bag of money but a bag none the less!

Kinda what I figured. These are a one year only hose and are NOT being reproduced....now if it were a Ford or a Chevy

For $350 I can get these restored with the incorrect hose & incorrect crimps (the orig crimps are radial not hexagonal like todays crimps) & have the metal lines plated ....not sure how they do it.

Oh well....clear zinc spray paint here I come
