How can I remove copper plating from nickel plating

I want to remove a distressed copper plating from the surface of good nickel plating without harming the nickel plating. Is nitric acid the best choice ? Will it effect the nickel underneath adversely? Should or could I use a different chemical?

Nitric will strip nickel, so keep it away from that. Caswell sells a really good copper stripper. Easy to use.

i use caswells nickel strippers and belive me they make plating much more fun as my hobby
