Thread: copper over silver

  1. copper over silver

I have a small metal trumpet tube that is brass with silver plating. The silver plating is about 50% worn off and has some pitting. What I want to do is plate over the piece with copper, without removing all the silver, and then final plate with silver.

    Can copper go over silver?

Also, what is the difference between the silver in 4 oz bottle and the larger bottle that is cyanide free?

Yes, but an easier solution would be to buff the tube until the silver has been removed and also the pits, then re-silver it.

All our silver solutions are cyanide free.

You could also use our SilverSmith/Plater product for this application.

Hi! I have the same problem as the original poster but my project would be to resilver plate an antique flute which I think is made of nickel, then silverplated. It's the silver plate that seems to be affected by the pitting and wear, and the nickel is popping through.

Should I also sand it smooth to remove the leftover silver then resilver right on top?

Sand it smooth to remove the pits, which will also remove the silver. Then use Silversmith/Silverplater to replate.
