handguns nickle vs chrome

Does anyone know why guns are nickle plated without a crome plate? It seems to me that the crome would keep it looking better for a longer time. Is there a reason that chrome isn't applied to a firearm? Thanks for any input you can give me.

the main reason is any original gun was never chrome plated. and the gun would surely cost more as well.
