Chrome Plating Plastics and Die Cast Metals?

Hi,
I'm very new to the world of Chrome Plating. I want to know what's the process to chrome plate plastics and die cast metals. For example, the buttons on the controls of a motorcycle and die cast metal clutch and brake levers. It seems like alot of things are chrome, but they aren't what I would consider a real metal like steel. Like I said I'm new and don't really know much about this, so any help would be great! Thanks....
