this may sound like a silly question but, how do you support the items you want to plate so that they get an even coating all over. and also how would you stop the plating process from adhearing to certain parts. for instance, i have some hinges i want chromed but i do not want the hinge pins coated, just the metal support for the pins?

thanks in advance

You are hanging the parts into the plating solution from a bar that sits on top of the tank.

The part is hanging on a piece of copper wire, into the solution.

You can't stop a little piece of the wire from being plated, so you have to try to connect the wire to the part in a non conspicuous area.

You can use tape, or a masking lacquer (search our site for masking lacquer)

In the case of your hinges, why not just disassemble the hinges and only plate the support sections?

thanks for your reply.
if plating small items such as self tapping screws would you have to wind copper wire into the thread of each screw? or could you start the tread in to a sheet of plastic so they all stood upright in regimented rows?

thanks again

You could do either.
