Thread: Plating nuts and bolts for car restoration

  1. Plating nuts and bolts for car restoration

I am restoring a 1977 Porsche 911. and have been advised to anodise the bolts and nuts to restore them to 'new' condition.
I thought anodising was for aluminium only. Can this be done, or should I nickel or cad plate them? Does the plating make the bolts too 'fat' to go throught the nuts?
Any help would be much appreciated.
    Thanks in advance.
    Dino.

Anodizing is for aluminum or titanium only. The bolts should be able to be cad plated without a tolerance problem on the threads. Unless they are special made bolts, the standard grade 5 bolt normally used for most applications is a little loose on geometric tolerences. At the worst, you might have to run a die over any that won't start and thread ok. This is normal for bolts and nuts that have been chromed for show applications. Good luck. SS

  3. porsche do use aluminium wheel nuts but predominately on the newer cars. I guess if there as heavy as normal bolts go for the plate. If they do seem on the light side they may well be aluminium.
