stripping smut

some alu parts get all black within 30 secs of being immersed in lye while other parts get almost no smut layer at all. Even after sanding and polishing the part some it still gets all dirty when stripping and it's almost impossible to whipe clean.
What is this and what does it indicate?

There are many different alloys of aluminum. They will all react slightly differently to chemicals.
