What type of cleaner do you use before plating?

wondering what type of cleaner can be used before plating?

i have buffed all my parts to a high shine and now want to use one of my plug n plate kits.

what would i use to clean off the piece so i can plate?

if it is bare metal can i just use

accetone,paint thinner?
some sort of engine degreaser?

i am assuming using water will just make the part rust.

Sure. Hot water and detergent work well too.

Perhaps if you leave it overnight, but not if you're plating it right away.
