PLATING SHEETMETAL

IM NEW TO THE WHOLE WORLD OF PLATING AND VERY INTERESTED IN WEATHER OR NOT SHEETMETAL CAN BE CHROME PLATED IN LARGE FORMAT .THE THING IS THIS IM CURRENTLY BUILDING A TOTALLY CUSTOM 99 FORD F150 AND I WANT TO CHROME PLATE THE FRONT HALF OF THE HOOD AND FENDERS SO THAT I CAN MASK OFF THE REAR EDGE OF THE CHROME IN A PATTERN THAT WOULD LOOK LIKE THE PAINT WAS PEELING OFF AND THE EXPOSED METAL BELOW WAS ALL CHROME . IVE GONE TO MY LOCAL PLATER AND ASKED THE DREADED QUESTION , AND HE CAME BACK TO ME WITH A PRICE OF OVER $3000 AND HE COULDNT GUARANTEE IT WOULD WORK. ANY HELP WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED.JASON

It would be impratical to tackle this job yourself. The biggest two obstacles are the power requirements and the tank size and amount of solution.

To chrome plate, you need 1-1.5amps per square inch of surface area. You will also need a lot of solution and very large tank to immerse the part....and don\'t forget that chrome plating is a three part process...nickel, copper and chrome.

$3000 from your plating shop sounds about right. We encourage customers to leave large pieces like this (and bumpers) to the plating shops.
