By using a weak solution of muriatic acid and a stainless steel or lead sheet, you can reverse plate the chrome off. Because chrome plate is a very thin layer, the chrome is stripped very quickly. You can also buff the chrome off with an abrasive compound, such as emery.

Default removing chrome from brass

Hi:
I like to heat my muratic/hydrocloric (same thing)acid and water up to about 170 deg F. I use about 25% muratic to 75% water. ADD THE ACID TO THE WATER>>>>DONT ADD THE WATER TO THE ACID!!!Once I have degreased the part, I immerse it in the acid and it almost instantly fizzes, turns black and then the chrome is gone!

Thanks for the additional details 48 Buick! So you don't use reverse current dechroming? Gus

Default removing chrome from brass

Hi Gus:
No, I dont reverse plate. It seems to attack the base metal and then I have to finish the part even more to remove the etching.
Usually you only have to remove chrome, activate the nickel, then either copper plate or nickel plate, then chrome.
Hope this helps.

Thanks again Buick, But what about if I'm wanting to silver plate. Does the Nickel have to be removed too? or activated? Gus

No - you can silver plate directly over nickel without activating.
