Default How can you remove Etch Primer from Chrome?

I am restoring an old Pontiac GTO (1964). The back of the car has three long horizontal pot-metal pieces with horizontal ribs which are chrome.

When these cars came from the factory these chrome pieces had red paint down in between the raised ribs. As far as I can tell, the entire piece was chromed, and then the paint was added down in the valleys.

In restoring the car, I had these pieces rechromed. The rechrome shop did an ok job (there were a lot of existing pits, so they did their best). My painter though got lazy. He didn't bother to keep the paint off of the top of the ribs. You can see a pic of this here:

http://www.deepforestsystems.com/GTO.nsf/0/3B00D8CCC4887B1D852571B40066A43F/$file/043%20-%20Back%20of%20GTO.jpg

He first used a high quality etching primer, and then added the paint over the top. This is good for the valleys (where I want the paint to stay), but is there something I can use to remove the paint & etching primer? I'm imagining using a cloth to rub away only what is on the ribs without touching the valleys.

Also, if I did find the right solvent to remove the paint & etching primer, will the etching primer have ruined the finish on the chrome at the top of the ribs?

Thanks for any help!

Nutrideath,

Just a suggestion. I would take it back to your plater and ask him what could be used to remove the etching primer. He should know of something that wouldn't hurt the chrome!

If the plating was done correct you can use a lot of things, as long as it is not a acid. Try ascetone or paint thinner, or better yet do as the other post said and get the plater to fix their own problem.
