I want to gold plate several mouthpieces on musical instruments I own. They all are brass with a silver plating. Can I gold plate directly over the silver?
Thanks,
Smitty2

Smitty2,
Yes you can.
The gold will go over a silver plate very nicely.
Just be sure to polish the pieces beforehand and ensure that they are perfectly clean.
You can brush plate several layers of gold over the silver to obtain the desired thickness and color. Just buff lightly after each layer and re-clean before plating again.
Best of luck,

Ash...
Thanks for your reply. I had read some posts where they recommended nickel plating first, but I was worried since many people have allergies to nickel.
BTW, I see you live in Warner-Robins, GA. My boy is stationed at the Air Base there. He will be going to Germany this spring.
Smitty,
Nickel is an excellent base coat for any of the precious metals, but like you said, many people have allergic reactions from it.
I stay away from Nickel as a base metal if it is going to come into contact with someone’s skin. I.E. Eyeglasses, Mouthpieces, Jewelry, etc.
Fine silver is an excellent alternative in this case.
I work at Robins Air Force Base and I am a member of the Ga. Air National Guard.
I'm sure that your son will love Germany. Tell him to have a safe trip.
