I've been reading the Caswell forum for the past while about copy chrome. I have the 4.5 gallon triple chrome setup but want to do some larger things such as some bumpers and other larger trim for my old Jaguar. They are fairly small in surface area for bumpers, about 170square inches counting inside and outside. But they are about 30 inches long. I got a shallow tank about 10"wide by 34"long by 7"deep that I planned on using for the nickel and chrome. But after doing a bunch of smaller stuff in chrome, I realize the current to do the larger stuff is out of my range. And the chrome is pretty tricky to keep from hazing the edges and getting to throw into low spots. Add to that the fumes and I think the copy chrome is the better route. Also, if the copy chrome throws like the nickel, I can easily plate everywhere on any part.
Now my real concern is twofold. First, can I expect the copy chrome to plate like the nickel in the tank I descibed? And second, and more importantly, Is there going to be a noticeable difference between copy chrome and the real thing when they are side by side on a black car? A slight differnce would be ok, but if you could tell instantly, like between nickel and chrome, that would be no good. I know this has been talked about on the forum to no end, but I would like to have my specific questions answered. Thanks for any input. Jim VanAlstyne |

Thanks for the reply, Jim! Another question though. Is the copy chrome a nickel alloy or like somethig I read said, cobalt? And is it as easy to scratch as nickel would be with no chrome on it?
The tanks I was talking about are really wider than I said. I was going to partition off the required size with plastic pieces and silicone sealant. That way I could make a custom shaped tank for different stuff and still be able to get away with 4.5 gallons of electolyte. Does this make sense, or are there any cautions I should look out for. Maybe improper agitation or anodes too far from the work piece? I'm fairly new at the chrome end of things, but have been doing zinc plating for about 7 years. Maybe it's a matter of me knowing just enough to get into trouble! Thanks a lot for your thoughts, this is a great resourse for info on these plating kits. Jim VanAlstyne |
