I have a musical instrument mouthpiece that is silver plated brass. I want to increase the diameter of the shank (end that goes into the instrument) by approximately .001". Is it possible, using the Plug and Plate to silver plate onto an existing silver plate, or do I need to use gold or some other metal? Also, does anybody know what range of thicknesses can be achieved by doing so? I need to get about .0005" of plating on both sides of the shank. I have tried using the rub-on Silverplater, but have not been able to get a measurable thickness difference (silver on silver).
I am new here, and new to plating. Thanks. -Craig |

The easiest and most economical process to increase the outer diameter would be to remove the silver plate from the brass, polish the brass, clean well to make sure all buffing compound is removed, reactivate the brass in 10% sulfuric acid, plate nickel to desired thickness, then immediately flash silver plate over the nickel. I would assume that the silver plate is thin so should be able to chemically or mechanically remove the silver plating with no problem.
