Question regarding brush plating gold

I have been brush plating onto a decorative nickle plated plate with Fast Gold using a rectifier set at 4.5 volts.

Portions of the plate are significantly darker than the rest, why does this happen and how do I lighten it up once its done.

Second.

Can someone recomend a good masking agent as I am brush plating a piece with some detail.

I use plumbers putty to mask with. Its cheap, water/chemical proof, and easily molded to any piece. And you can use it over and over.

Try nail polish, something bright that you can see.

try reducing your voltage, the softer the metal , the less voltage you need
