Using gun "bluing" on a weld to restore the color from welding?

Anyone ever done this or know how? It was suggested to use gun bluing solution but weld heat has a blue color and a little bit of a rainbow effect doesn't it? Isn't gun bluing just like a blackening solution? I'm restoring a set of halfshafts and a driveshaft and originally the metal around the weld on each end of the shaft was discolored from the heat.
