Default :!: Nickel on copper problems

I am trying to gold plate some plastic. Ive done this a few times and its came out great. For some reason when I try to brush plate the nickel on it comes out very dull and britlle. I tryed gold plating on top of this and got a good finish in some places and in some areas its stripped the plating right down to the plastic. Any one got any ideas what ive done wrong.
