I was wondering how the adherence of the above plating would be affected if they were used on something like a coil spring - something that will be flexing a certain amount. Would the plate be likely to crack or flake off?

Nickle and chrome are fairly hard metals and would likely crack if flexed.
Gold, being softer, is less likely to crack.
