Default Nickel won't 'take'

I am trying to plate brass and copper parts with nickel. I am using the plug and plate system. For some reason, I cannot get the nickel to adhere to these metals. The surfaces have been polished and cleaned. I have no problem with copy chrome, copper and gold, so my power supply is ok. Is it possible my solution is bad?

I suspect you may need to deoxidize the copper and alloys before plating. Caswell sells a stripper/activator in powdered form. You desolve it in water to make a solution for a dip process. Look for Pickle #4.
