Default How many amps do I need to strip chrome

I have just had a go at stripping some chrome parts using a chemical chrome stripper, unfortunately nothing happened. I was using a rectifier that I use for pen plating, its a 1.5amp max, and its voltage is variable between 3 -12 volts. I was wondering if this rectifier is up to the job?

You will probably need more current.

How big are the parts?

What stripper are you using?

I find with an alkaline chrome strip (draino, sodium hydroxide) you need at least 250mA/square inch, 1A/Square inch will really rip it off quick. As the chrome strips off you will see the stainless steel cathode/s and the part fizzing and the solution around the item being stripped will turn yellow.

I usually hook the parts up and simply turn up the voltage untill I see the fizzing and yellow going into solution. I use car jumper leads to cope with the current.

WARNING: OLD CHROME PLATING IS HEXAVALENT CHROMIUM. WHEN YOU STRIP CHROME, YOU MUST DISPOSE OF THE STRIPPER CORECTLY.

Cheers Mark

You may also have fallen into a very common trap. Chrome strips VERY quickly because it's a very thin layer, and the nickel plate that's under it looks very similar to the chrome.

Many people call us saying their stripper isn't working, when in fact the chrome has all gone and they're looking at the nickel plate.

Test with a stainless wand, connected to reverse plate, and use some stripper solution. If you see a yellow stain on the bandage, there's still chrome on there.

I run volts up to 12. or as close as you can. It depends size of part. I would say you may need a bigger rectifier. Sometimes it is very hard to tell if the chrome is removed. You will know when you plate because it will not stick. Todd
