Default Nickel plating gone wrong

Hi all.... Can anyone advise on whats gone wrong with this item i have nickel plated,it was bare steel & highly polished prior to being lowered into caswell bright nickel 95f with bubbler, please see picture..some areas have plated but where the areas have not it has created a black sooty coating & the rest has just turned dull & not plated.
Can anyone advise what causes the black areas which is not easy to rub off & why the other areas have not plated at all,it was plated at 8amps which is correct? and yes.... i am new to this!!

I belive that 8 amps is to high. I belive the nickel should be 1 amp to 16 sq. in. The parts do not look like 128 sq. in. Todd

Thanks for that....Would the amps being to high be the blackening on the steel?
